Abstract
In the wake of Hurricane Andrew's passage through South Florida and coastal Louisiana, the Truss Plate Institute, Inc. organized as Damage Assessment Team of professionals qualified in wood truss design. The objective was to evaluate the performance of metal-plate-connected wood truss roof systems under extreme wind loading. This article is an excerpt of "Performance of Metal-Plate- Connected Wood Truss Roof Systems During Hurricane Andrew," a report by the Truss Plate Institute. The following material pertains to observations on trussed roof systems and factors that may have contributed to increase damage to buildings using this type of system. The information contained herein is representative of state-of-the-art knowledge within the metal- plate-connected wood truss industry, as it pertains to its conception, design, fabrication and intended end use.
