Abstract
In January 1980, UC Industries, Inc., began the business of commercially manufacturing and marketing extruded foam polystyrene boards under the registed trademark FOAMULAR. As described in Modern Plastics, a key element of UCI's pateneted process is the ability to produce polystyrene foams under conditions of subatmospheric pressure, so that less blowing agent is used compared to more conventional methods foaming at ambient pressure. This process includes pateneted extrusion die and shaping devices. Since they don not restrain or pack the developing foams, a smooth, thin skin is obtained. These products exhibit other properties that are difference from those made by more conventional methods. Beginning in 1984, UCI expanded the product line to include several density ranges, including a group with a minimum density of 21 kg/m3.
