Abstract
During the commercial production of polyether polyols, monofunctional alcohol species are formed in a competitive side reaction during the propolxylation of a multifunctional initiator. This base catalyzed ring opening of the propylene oxide leads to polyols with reduced net functionality. This is known to have a detrimentl effect on physical properties of polyurethanes especially in elastomers sealants and thermoplastics polyurethanes.
