Abstract
Test methods have been devleoped to measure the quantity of aggregate adhered to a built up roofing membrane under standard laboratory conditions and to measure the translucency of aggregates. Laboratory data from tests on a typical aggregate shows that the quantity of top coating bitumen has the greates influence on the quantity of adhered aggregate. The quantity of aggregate and the aggregate size have a lesser efect. In the quantities tested, moisture and dust content have little effect on the quantity of adhered aggregate. An "opaque" ASTM aggregate, that has a history of good performance in the field, has a translucency of 3% (97% opaque) by a new test method. A quartz aggregate has a translucency of 100% under the same conditions. Recommendations are listed to modify the current standard for aggregate by broadening the permitted quantities of water and dust and adding a "translucency" limit. Further work is suggested to determine the effect of other aggregates, bitumens and bitumen temperatures on the quantity of adhered aggregate.
