Abstract
The Japanese Islands are situated in a chain from 24 degrees to 45 degrees, 30 ft. north latitude, or from a semi-tropical zone to a frigid zone, with temperatures ranging from a maximium of approximately 40C to -40C and moreover, have large amounts of precipitation and consequently high humidity. Waterproofing of building subjected to these meteorological conditions has been studied over many years and the results achieved as the levels of the economy and technology have risen have been manifested in Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) with respect to standards for waterproofing materials and in the provisions of the Japanese Architectural Standard Specifications (JASS) in regard to construction standards including recommended practices concerning materials not yet covered under JIS. This paper discusses progress in building waterproofing through the antecedents of establishment of the above JIS and JASS standards describing the technical and economic backgrounds of waterproofing materials and performances in application centered around development of the asphalt waterproofing method and the synthetic polymeric roofing sheet waterproofing method.
