Abstract
This paper describes the work recently undertaken to investigate the requirements for mastic asphalt used on flat roofs. One aim of the research was to develop a test method for the assessment of mastic asphalt, since the hardness measurements at present used in the UK have proved to be unreliable and to have poor repeatability. A simple bending test, carried out on a cast sample of mastic asphalt at low temperature, showed potential for development as a test method for quality assurance purposes. The other objective was to evaluate the improvements in performance of mastic asphalt in the low-temperature conditions that can be obtained by modification of the material by the addition of small proportions of appropriate polymers.
