Abstract
As the desing of buildings reach new heights, so must the wind uplift resistance of their roof assemblies. Single plies have since taken the off in the battle for higher performing systems but not without casualties. Although loose laid ballasted systems are among the most economical and most popular type of configurations, stone ballast doesn't provide sufficient wind performance for many of their applications. Roof pavers have since emerged on the scene as an answer to this problem, yet it has been difficult to scientifically quantify how well they perform and what limitations exist. This article is an abbreviated version of NCMA's technial report No. RCP-88702 which describes a test program conducted at the Glenn L. Martin Wind Tunnel of the Aerospace Engineering Dept. of Univ of Maryland. The full 110 page report contains specific design data regarding interanl building pressures and their affect on roof covering uplift, in addition to information pertaining to the impact of wind exposure and turbulence on loose laid roofing system failure.
