Abstract
The roofing membrane is the vital waterproofing element of the total roofing system. Its purpose is to prevent water, snow, sleet, hail, etc., from entering the structure from above. A built-up roofing membrane is constructed of alternate layers of waterproofing bitumen and felt. In any bituminous system the waterproofness of the membrane depends on the performance of the bitumen. The felts provide stability to the system and hold the bitumen in place.
