Abstract
For many years the design and use of buildings remained unchanged and thus certain materials by tradition and experience were found to function satisfactorily. Standards describing these materials were restricted to ensuring that the same material was acquired and used each time. In recent years, however, rapid changes in design and use of building structures responding in part to the availability of new materials has created voices in the field of standards. The need for performance standards and test procedures is more evident. This paper describes the operation of two North America based standards writing organizations, the types of standards they produce and the direct and indirect influence they play in the roofing industry in North America.
