Design Considerations for Cool Roofs

Abstract
Many jurisdictions mandate the use of Cool Roofs—white and light-colored roof membranes with high solar reflectance and thermal emittance values—to mitigate urban heat island effects and reduce summer cooling costs. However, unanticipated issues, such as condensation under the roof membrane, have led to the deterioration of wood deck substrates in some climates. This Technical Bulletin summarizes the 2020 Technical Bulletin1 that addressed design practices to prevent such issues, highlighting the benefits and observed problems with single-ply Cool Roofs.
