Abstract
This paper review the different thermoanalytic techniques used in the study of polymeric roofing membranes. Various polymeric materials are being used to manufacture roofing membranes. The polymers may be used as additives to yield desired properties, for example modified bitumen contain either SBS or APP. Alternatively, the polymer acts as the matrix, e.g., EPDM, PVC, etc. Each material has advantages and disadvantages. Thermal analysis is a family of techniques which allows users and manufacturers to evaluate the materials before and after weathering. Thermogravimetry may be used to monitor variations in chemical composition. Differential scanning calorimetry is used to monitor enthalpy as well as the glass transition temperature. Dynamic mechanical analysis and thermomechanical analysis may be used to detect changes in the glass transition temperature coefficient of thermal expansion and modulus. Descriptions of these techniques and how they can be used to evaluate the performance of roofing membranes is given.,
