Abstract
The phenomenon of ridging and wrinkling has been reported in approximately 1% of modified bituminous roofs. Investigations showed that, for the most part, these ridges and wrinkles were cosmetic defects and did not compromise waterproofing capability. It was determined that membrane ridging occurred predominantly over roofs where substrate problems existed and that membrane wrinkling was more predominant when roofs were applied in cold weather. Statistics show that 99 out of 100 modified bitumen roofs are considered aesthetically acceptable. Where membranes are applied under adverse conditions some wrinkling is almost inevitable: there is a trade-off between aesthetics and having the roofing applied in cold weather. This document illustrates the types of ridges and wrinkles tha have been seen and identifies ways to reduce their occupance.
