Abstract
Building performance assessments following hurricanes and northeasters consistently show deficiencies in building foundations, connections, materials, and construction practices. Some result from failure to account for coastal processes and storm induced loads, satisfying architectural rather than structural needs, and the belief that current codes, standards and flood hazard maps adequately safeguard against storm effect.
