Abstract
Except for houses that are roofed with shingles and some industrial buildings roofed with corrugated sheets of metal or asbestos-cement, most of the other roofs in Canada are built to be flat and are waterproofed with biutminuos materials. Such roofs have not always given the service expected of them. This paper delineates the requirements of a modern roofing system and traces the development of roofing systems in Canada. The features of protected membrane roofs are discussed in relatoin to structural, thermal, air and water and vapor control aspects. This system is shown to be admirably suited to Canadian conditions. Its application to roof terraces and its usage in Canada completes the paper.
