Literature review of attic ventilation impacts on Florida homes for the Florida Department of Community Affairs

Abstract
The Florida Dept of Community Affairs is seeking to examine the impact and necessity of residentail attic ventilation in Florida homes. Here, the author provides technical support by examining existing data sources on the impacts of attic ventilation both on cooling and heating energy use as well as to attic and home moisture levels. The issues with sealed attic construction where the attic is unvented and expandanded foam insulatoin is applied directly to the underside of the roof decking is evaluated. Data from Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) instrumened facilitites to add unique information to the evaluation is reported. This review emphasizes literature wehre there are extensive monitoring in Florida and other hot climates. Analysis of the empirical data suggest inferences on attic thermal performance and associated impact on space cooling and space heating as well as attic moisture levels. Other potential influences are also discussed.
