Abstract
Rigid polyurethane foam provides excellent insulation properties imparted by the use of CFC 11 and HCFC 14lb as blowing agents resulting in hR values compared to other insulating materials used in the construction industry. The imminent phaseout ofjCFCs and ultimately HCFCs will have an impact on the performance of these foams since all alternative blowing agents show worse gaseous insulation properties when compared to CFC 11. Superimposed on this technology transition will be any mandated increases in the energy efficiency of buildings. One of the more promising new technologies which have been developed over the past few years in resopnse to the need for more efficient insulation materialswith reduced environmental impact is the use of vacuum panels. Several approaches to such a concept have been developed all showing excellent insulation performance with an R value three to fives times better than conventional CFC 11 blown rigid polyurethane foam technology. ICI Polyurethanes has now introduced a novel concept for the production of vacuum panels where the filler material is a very fine open cell rigid polyurethane foam. The major advantages of the ICI technology are to be found in cost reduction and weight reduction of the vacuum panels thus making the technology amendable to large scale production whilst still offering excellent insulation performance.
