Abstract
According to the US Energy Information Administration, in 2012, there were 5.6 million commercial buildings with 87.1 billion square feet of floor space. Around 53% of these buildings are comprised of retail, office, education, healthcare, and lodging, which use the most energy of all commercial buildings, with almost one quarter of the energy consumption spent on space heating. The low sloped roofs of these buildings represent a substantial portion of the building thermal envelope and are likely to be one of the primary sources for energy loss.
