Abstract
The new PVDF latex polymer can be formulated at VOC levels less than 50 g/1 to meet regulations. Since the new water-based PVDF emulsions are air-dry systems and don’t require heat for curing, they can be applied to a whole new range of substrates. At least three mechanisms appear to contribute to the "stay-clean" properties of PVDF based coatings; crystallinity, surface properties, and the inhospitality to fungal growth. Several examples illustrated these properties as compared to typical elastomeric acrylic or PVC membrane materials, which showed poor "stay-clean" properties. A "stay-clean" coating with a minimum value of 0.77 versus a poor performing system with a TSR value of0.55 can result in an energy savings potential difference of more than 60%.
