Abstract
Having observed over the years the advantages and inconvenience of the classical waterproofing systems with resin bases, etc., we intend, with this paper, to inform about the experience in Spain of cold-applied bituminous mastics as an effective, easy-to-apply and economical system to waterproof bridge decks. The user is assured the basic aim of waterproofing while providing other fundamental factors such as its excellent adherence to support and to the top layers of the weathering course, which are transmitted also to the waterproofing. In this work, we also describe some of the laboratory tests that have prompted us to optimize the working formula, as regards to the type and quantity of binding, range of mineral aggregates, the effects of using modified bitumen, convenience or inconvenience of using fibers, etc.
