Abstract
The paper deals with the effect on the system performance of flat roofs when a newly developed product is substituted in an existing system for a more traditional material. The technical assessment methods used by contractors, working through Trade Associations, are described and the need for more realistic published information is stressed. The relative importance of ecompnenets to total system performance is considered and the necessary properties of roof deck and thermal insulation materials are stated in some detail. The reasons for the traditionally conservative approach by contractors to the promoters of new components is explored. In conclusion, it is proposed that better methods of consultation should be developed between those responsible for the development and testing of new components and the users in the contract industry.
