Abstract
Rigid polyurethane foam provides excellent insulation properties imparted by the use of CFC-11 and HCFC 141b as blowing agents resulting in high R values compared to other insulating materials used in the construction industry. The imminent phaseout of CFCs and ultimately HCFCs, forseen by the Montreal Protocol and its subsequent revisions, will have an impact on the performance of these foams since all alternative blowing agents show worse gaseous insulation properties when compared to CFC 11. Superimposed on this technology transition will by any mandated increases in the energy efficiency of buildings. One of the more promising new technologies which have been developed over the past few years in resonse to the need for more efficient insulation materials with reduced environmental impact is the use of vacuum panels. Several approaches to such a concept have been developed all showing excellent insulation performance with an R value three to five times better than conventional CFC 11 blown rigid polyurethane foam technology.
