Abstract
In response to growing interest in sustainable construction, new sustainable construction standards for material selection and design assistance are being developed to help building practitioners make effective design and material selection regarding long-term building sustainability. However, some researchers have expressed concern that many emerging sustainable construction standards place too little emphasis on durability. In response to these concerns the researchers have identified a process-based approach to address long-term building envelope durability as an integral part of sustainable building design. This approach provides a conceptual matrix to identify the critical determinants of durability, propose strategies to minimize the effects of these determinants, and develop an action plan and timetable to implement these strategies. This paper reviews the features and benefits of this matrix approach, including a brief review of the essential durability paradigm, a detailed examination of the key matrix elements and a critical review of the matrix as a whole.
