Abstract
In response to concerns that its LEED Green Building Rating System places too little emphasis on material durability, the U.S. Green Building Council has begun to introduce life cycle assessment (LCA) into the program structure to give greater consideration to the longevity and performance of building components. Recently, a new LCA methodology called Eco-Efficiency Analysis has emerged that may be useful in addressing life cycle assessment within the current LEED program. This paper will review the basic concepts of eco-efficiency and the mechanics for conducting an eco-efficiency analysis of construction materials. Examples of roofing and other construction materials that have been previously analyzed and rated using this method will be reviewed, and the implications of the findings will be discussed.
