Abstract
During the past decade, exposed single-ply roof systems have become very popular for large commercial structures in the continental U.S. The insulation and membrane are attached to the structural deck by means of mechanical fasteners. The work develops the fractional part of the heat loss/gain from the roof to the total heat loss/gain of the entire structure into a simple efficiency ratio that is a function of the building's dimensional parameters; the thermal resistance of floors, walls and roof; and the design differential temperature between the exterior and interior environments. The size and spacing of fasteners, according to Factory Mutual Standards; the known influence of aging of roof insulation; and the influence of moisture on insulation on the R value of commercial roof systems is developed. These effects including fasteners, aging, moisture and solar effects jointly and separately and are shown to be of significant magnitude to cause major design concerns for the selection of certain types of single-ply systems.
