Abstract
It is known that ordinary distillation bitumens are not suitable for the manufacture of roll roofing because of their low softening point, great thermal susceptibility and high flow at low temperatures. This paper describes a process for creating a polymer structure in a bituminous binder by the introducton of different types of resins, thereby modifying appropriate rheological characteristics for flexible sheet manufacture, using traditional methods of processing thermoplastic materials. The bituminous roll roofing obtained is more durable than that manufactured from blown bitumens by conventional methods. The tensile strength, yield point and strain under load of the modified bituminous binder indicate that these materials resemble thermoplastics more than the conventional bituminous products usually used in the manufacture of roll roofing.
