Abstract
There have been recent changes to steep slope roofing underlayment requirements to prevent wildfires from igniting combustible roof decks. The 2024 International Wildland Urban Interface Code (IWUIC) and 2022 California Residential Code have mandated that certain steep slope roof assemblies in wildfire prone areas must use underlayments that meet ASTM E108 Class A standards. This bulletin explains the evolution of this code change, notes the specific roof assemblies where these underlayments are required, and provides recommendations for alternate underlayment materials.
