Abstract
About eight out of ten residential buildings in the United States have asphalt shingled roofs. Asphalt shingles are good looking, long lasting, and easy to install. They are available from lumber yards and many varieties cost under $10.00 a bundle. Asphalt shingles are installed by everyone from the professional roofer to the kid down the block. MOst of the installations are correct, but a good many are not. Installation instructions are printed on each bundle of shingles. Here is a quotation from one roof "The instructions are good enough to allow you to shingle a shed roof without too many problems." This chapter will help you avoid installing an asphalt shingle roof that leaks, blows off, looks shoddy or wears out prematurely.
