Abstract
Shake shingle roofs are popular in some areas of the country, mainly the northwestern states where red cedar and redwood grow. Covered in this chapter are: insects and fungi, weathering, tannic acid, fire caution, shake versus wood shingles, disadvantages of wood shingles, grades and description of wood shakes and shingles, spaced sheathing use, physical sizes and coverage, slope restrictions, underlayment, reroofing with wood shingles, metal ridge and hip caps on old roofs, rake and eave treatment, ridge shingles, repair to a broken or split wood shingle or shake, acid rain and rubbish removal.
