Abstract
For built up roofing membranes with either linear or non-linear stress-strain behavior, fully bonded to an underlying deck or substrate which undergoes displacement, it is the equality of the complementary strain energy of the fabric or felt layer with the strain energy of the boding adhesive or bitumen layer, which governs both the conditions under which membrane integrity is lost and the mode of failure by either membrane splitting or adhesive bonding. The testing criteria developed are applied to a sample case.
