Abstract
American techniques for using wood in roof construction whether it be for residential, commercial or industrial application, is probably in advance of any other country. Much credit for the significant use of plywood as an integral part of roof design has to be given to the American Plywood Assn. The many shapes possible in plywood roof construction offer architects flexibility in design, provide builders ease of construction, and give owners economy and durability. Examples will be shown grahpically and be described in "case history" presentation of recent USA experience. Examination of the chemical needs of plywood will be developed particularly at the glueline coupled with the use of plywood as a component material when designed into a roof. Consideration will be given to plywood installed for diaphragm construction, stressedskin, curved panel, and folded plate profiles. Methods of fixing and fire-resistant construction will also be discusses, as will plywood used to form concrete roof structure. Much of the future of plywood lies in the use with other materials such as plastics, metals, sandwich and foam core construction. New development of stone chippings, overlays and chemical spray coatings used with plywood roofing material will be explored.
