Abstract
This chapter is a mixture of text and construction examples designed to acquaint you with the various construction techniques currently being used in the industry. The examples show construction from the top wall sills to the ridge line and are included in this text because construcdtion will affect your job. You must be able to spot a potential problem area on paper if you are to do your job correctly and at a profit. Here are some differences between doing new construction and reroofing; New construction work differs from doing reroofing in several ways: 1) you usually do not have the opportunity to see the actual roof surface that you will be roofing over; 2) usually your measurements are from a blueprint rather than an actual roof surface. 3) Most of the time you will be required to use materials selected or purchased by the general contractor or architect, and these may not be materials with which you are familiar. 4) You may be making a bid weeks or even months before the actural job is to be done. 5) You must rely on other tradesman to do their job correctly. On a reroof, most problems caused by other workers have already been corrected. 6) you must know and understand the nomenclature and construction used. It doesn't matter too much on a reroof job that you can see whether you are bidding on a flat roof or an A frame. When you are bidding from paper, it can make a tremendous difference in time, materials, setup and technique. The chapter covers the basics of roofs and roof framing construction.
