Abstract
The physical properties of a bitumen depend on the chemical structures of the bitumen. This study of the relationship between the chemical and physical characteristics covers the fundamental factors regarding the improvement of the waterproofness of bituminous roofing and the properties of the bitumen itself. This subject has attracted many researchers in the past, but due to the complexity of bituminous structures and the limitations of the testing methods, few systematic research papers have been put forward. This paper deals with the analysis of bitumens made from some typical Chinese crude oils by the nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy method to find their chemical structure parameters. The physical properties of those bitumens are evaluated by routine and nonroutine tests. Finally, the paper studies the relationship between bituminous chemical structure parameters and physical properties. Owing to the complexity of bituminous chemical structures, further research work is still under way.
