Abstract
A laboratory research project was conducted to examine the impact resistance of laminated asphalt shingles with various support conditions. Roof panels were constructed using laminated asphalt shingles installed over weathered asphalt shingles as well as weathered wood shingles in both "nested" and "bridged" applications. A control panel with standard installation was constructed for comparison purposes. Solid icd speheres simulating hail were launched against the roof panels at established speeds and energies. Results indicated that asphalt shingles installed over asphalt shingles or wooden shingles were more susceptible to impact-caused damage than asphalt shingles installed over plywood decking. Additionally, shingle areas supported by underlying shingles or decking performed better than shingle areas with air spaces underneath (unsupported).
