Abstract
A literature review of the effects of moisture on built-up roofing was conducted. Quantitative data were summarized for some properties of membrane roofing, including permeability, absorption, thermal expansion, thermal resistance, tensile strength, modulus and fungus-attack resistance. Example calculations of possible temperature and moisture gradients for two typical roof sections were presented. Nondestructive evaluative methods to locate moisture in roof systems were summarized and include gravimetric, nuclear, capacitance, infrared imagery, electrical resistance and microwave methods. A review of techniques to dissipate moisture in roofing is presented.
