Experimental roofing assemblies reduce heat transfer

Abstract
Solar gain through roofing materials can greatly increase cooling demand in hot and mixed climates, by a combination of heat transfer through the attic insulation into the living space, as well as the heating of conditioned air in ducts routed through the hot attic space. With those issues in mind, researchers at Oak Ridge National Labs (ORNL) have been evaluating a wide variety of prototype roof assemblies designed to keep heat gain to a minimum.
