Abstract
The paper gives an account of the present state in the development of apparatus and procedure for testing the weather resistance of solid flat or low pitched roofs. The test facilities consist of three main parts. An upper box for simulation of outdoor climatic effects like: UV light, heating (infra red and convection), cooling (frost), water spray, pulsating air pressure and wind gust suctin for strength. A lower box for indoor climate where temperature and humidity can be controlled together with air pressure when testing for strength. The roof section under test ( about 240x240 cm) is clamped to a metal fram and held in position between upper and lower box. At present two test programs are under development, AGEING of covering and Wind UPLIFT resistance of structure including insulatin and covering. In the ageing test the various factors mentioned before are programmed on metallich charts to be applied in a predetermined manner to reproduce the ageing factors in climatic exposure. Wind uplift is semi-automatic in the sense that the pulsating pressure has to be adjusted manually for each step on the scale. The paper further disucsses how these programs have been used in testing different solid roofs.
