Abstract
The drought and forest fires last summer have made fire protection of wood shake and shingle products a high priority. But there still is much confusion about the effectiveness of the various fire retardant treatments available. Fire retardant chemicals can be applied to wood products before or after installation. The Red Cedar Bureau recommends purchasing new wood products that have been treated under pressure with a fire retardant chemical mixture, but what about buildings with existing wood shake roofs or siding? Several after market treatments of fire retardant chemicals for application on existing wood shakes and shingles are available. This article focuses on what some options are for after installation treatment as well as toxicity concerns.
