Abstract
Thsi paper addresses two major issues related to existing low rise structures. The first is to make a very rough assessment of the magnitudfe of the wind retrofit problems and potential benefits. The second is to describe some examples of retrofit procedures for low rise housing which might have a resonably high impact in reducing wind damage vulnerability and which could be carried out on a self help basis. Such self help activities could be encouraged through multi-media educational efforts and incentives offered by insurance companies. Among the examples to be presented are an evaluation of post- construction techniques to improve anchorage of roof systems to supporting structures and a technique to develope integrity of roof sheathing which may not have been adequately fastened to supporting rafters or trusses without violating the integrity of the external roofing system.
