Abstract
The purpose of introducing a new idea to the roofing industry involves many stages of development: an analysis of the requirements of the product, basic research into materials and techniques, and then a full, detailed design study culminating in a prototype product or system. This is followed by field trials, where the viability of the original design is critically assessed and then modified in light of information gained during this development period. In this case presented, the original aim was to devise a system for building up a flat roof without the use of hot bitumen. It was envisioned that this would be accomplisehd by the use of a totally self-adhesive sheet system. However, the system was modified during the development process to achieve the original objective, but by a combination of torching and self adhesion.
