Abstract
Increased property damage from hail impact has become more common in recent years, with the majority of the damage occurring to roofs. To help address this concern, a very Severe Hail (VSH) rating for low-slope roofing is being developed, using a modified version of the test method described in AnSi/FM 4473. Testing was completed using ice balls to impact single-ply, modified-bitumen, and built-up roof covers over insulations and cover boards to determine which factors contribute to roof system failure when exposed to ice balls with increased impact energies. The effects of ultraviolet (UV) aging and sample surface temperature on the performance of the samples were also studied.
