Abstract
The economy in the cost of any structural system depends on the use of optimum proportions of the individual components constituting it. Savings that could be achieved through individual components in turn depends on the choice of structural configuration and accurate analysis of the effect of the loads on the system. In an effort to achieve new design and technique different from traditional building methods, eight full scale asbestos shee concrete composite roof slabs (known as Astro- Crete) were designed and tested. The strength and behavior of Astro-Crete slabs with the asbestos sheets on the tension zone is discussed in the elastic, cracking and ultimate stages. It is demonstrated that composit reinforced concrete roof slabs either with semicorrugated or corrugated asbestos sheet in the tension zone can effect a saving of 50% in steel and 35% in concrete without any sacrifice in the structural performance. This saving in the construction material of the roof system will result in considerable saving in the overall cost of the construction.
