Abstract
As outside influences continue to promote, deem and adapt roof related codes and standards of roof components, designers are under new pressure to “design to code”. This paper will address the fact, that though codes and standards may require compliance, the design professional’s “standard of care” is not lessened. Roofs are systems and their success dependent on the holistic relationship of their components; consequently the system is only as reliable as its weakest link. Roof system designs with the complexities of today’s construction, in association with the unknown conditions require knowledge and skilled designers. This article will endeavor to review the process by which designers that venture to achieve quality, sustainable roof systems should approach roof system design in order to achieve a properly functioning and sustainable low slope roof system; a roof system design that takes into consideration all the building elements that impinge upon the roof.
