Abstract
Nine types of commercial sheetings were selected for test samples, and the tests were carried out from two different standpoints; one was to investigate the durability of the materials themselves, and the other concerned the roof systems. Dumbbell specimens of the sheetings were exposed outdoors under tension in Tokyo and Sapporo in 1969, and similar specimens were exposed to ozone in an ozone chamber for 800 hours. Specimens of the roof systems were also exposed outdoors and duplicates to ozone, under the condition that the joints introduced into the substrates in the roof systems were opened. Based on the results after four years' exposure and 800 hours of the ozone test, it is recognized that the larger deformation made the heavier defect in sheetings, and that sheetings of poor resistance to ozone cracked early in the exposure period. Bonding characteristics between a sheeting and a substrate is a leading factor for the durability of roof systems as well as the quality of the sheeting itself, because stress induced in the sheeting by movement in the substrate varies according to the bonding characteristics.
