Abstract
Briefly describes the development of modern mastic asphalts used in Britian and the constituents and performance characteristics thereof. Consideration of the basic constructional forms over which the material is laid and defines the design requirements appropriate to each roof type in terms of falls to the surface, eaves and verge details and parapet walls. Discusses the factors involved in the use of insulants below mastic asphalt in relation to the various types of insulants usually encountered and the provision of solar reflective treatments. Reference is made to site requirements in respect of avoidance of damage to the finished rof, the storage of materials, access facilities and safety precautions. Concludes with a brief description of current trends and possible future developments and bibliography of available literature on the subject.
