Abstract
This paper will present the first phase of a major research project relating to the performance criteria and fitness for purpose of flat roofing systems in the UK. This project is being undertaken by Napier Polytech and the British Flat Roofing Council. It is jointly funded by Science and Engineering Research Council, the Department of Enviroment (UK). The aims of the project are to assess the life span criteria of roof systems, to compare design versus as-built performance and to evaluate diagnostic tools used for non-destructive testing; an economic evaluation also is being undertaken using life cycle cost comparison. The feedback from this research will advance the knowledge base relating to flat roofing performance. The output generated will form a valuable database of information, which will be incorporated into the BFRC Guide.
