Development of Flat Roof Technology in West Germany

Abstract
In a review of conventional & new materials their development and application in flat roofs are dealt with. The functionally correct coordination in flat roof building and the choice of the suitable material according to climatic and physical assessment in West Germany is illustrated by practical example. Through using "prefabricated" flat roof building materials, risks on the building site are eliminated, for example: uncontrollable weather influences, various materials, risks on the building, faulty construction. The paper reports on experiences with the flat roof in Germany. On the basis of time-cost comparisons in the application and working of conventional and new building materials. It is shown in several examples from several building fields that new structural units and structural elements substantially influence planning. The most important problems of connections and openings in the flat roof are illustrated by detailed solutions. Among these are the installations of roof lights and flat roof drainage. Risks in work are eliminated through using industrial series- produced products.
