Abstract
Traditional methods for providing fire resistance in bituminous systems for the building industry have been attained by means of applying a layer of round river gravel or chippings as roof finish. Substituting this heavyweight gravel protection for fire resistant bituminous membranes, finished only with lightweight mineral granules, provides specific technical and economic advantages worth considering. Fire safety in the building sector, which is increasing all the time, will lead us to reconsider present international specifications on the subject of fire-resistant materials, as well as other means of improving fire safety standards by acting on thermal insulation and specialized fire-resistant bituminous membranes, to provide the industry with safer fire-resistant roof systems and methods.
