Abstract
Seismic and expansion joints are building components designed to accommodate mid-structure building displacements from a combination of lateral forces (e.g., seismic and wind loads, structure settlement, thermal forces, and structural creep). Well-designed exterior seismic and expansion joints provide finish and waterproofing continuity of the building envelope while allowing differential movement between adjacent mid-structure portions. They are installed on roofs, walls, podium and terrace decks, and, in rare instances, below grade. For podiums and terraces, special design considerations should be implemented to maintain waterproofing continuity across seismic and expansion joints while still providing the required wearing surface. This technical bulletin addresses these special considerations.
