Abstract
Mechanical pads, common on many low-slope roofs, provide a platform for roof top mounted mechanical equipment without impacting the roof membrane. Long-term waterproofing solutions are needed to prevent water entry at mechanical pads. Current installation is to install a high temperature self-adhesive sheet membrane (SASM) underneath a sheet metal cap. Other design approaches are to extend the roof membrane up and over the pad or install a fabric reinforced coating system (separate from the roof membrane) over the top of the pads. This technical bulletin discusses the waterproofing options for roof top mechanical pads, summarizes specific waterproofing detailing considerations and the advantages and disadvantages of these options.
