Abstract
Roofing contractors are sometimes requested by owners and designers to flood test newly installed low-slope roofs to verify the water tightness of the installation following procedures used for horizontal waterproofing systems specified in ASTM D5957. This standard specifies flood testing over waterproofing systems by blocking the drainage outlets and ponding water, up to 4 in. deep, over the area for a period of 24 to 48 hours and periodically checking the interior space below for signs of leakage. For roof assemblies, flood testing can lead to disastrous consequences – not only is it difficult to verify a leakage path, but the newly installed roofing materials are at risk of irreversible damage. In fact, ASTM D5957 explicitly states that this test “is not intended for use on building roofing systems.” This technical bulletin explains why roof flood testing is not recommended and provides alternative quality control procedures that can be utilized to help ensure a successful roof installation.
